Carberry native Joey Witherspoon came up one win short of earning a trip to the Canadian junior curling championships on Monday in Winnipeg.

Witherspoon, a former three-time high school curling champion out of Carberry who now curls out of Winnipeg with Connor Njegovan, Taylor McIntyre and Dauphin native Brett Brezden, fell 9-3 to Kyle Doering of West Kildonan in yesterday afternoon’s final at the provincial junior men’s championship. Witherspoon had posted a perfect 7-0 record in pool play and advanced directly to the final after beating Winnipegger Derek Blanchard 10-5 in the 1-versus-1 page playoff game on Sunday night.

Blanchard, whose foursome featured Carberry native Trevor Calvert, went on to drop an 8-2 decision to Doering in Monday morning’s semifinal. Doering’s team, with third Colton Lott, second Derek Oryniak and lead Lucas Van Den Bosch, will now represent Manitoba at the Canadian championships in Napanee, Ont., from Feb. 4-12.

Meanwhile, Dauphin’s Sydney Arnal had her run stopped in Monday morning’s 2-versus-2 page playoff game in a 13-5 loss to Winnipeg’s Alyssa Vandepoele in the provincial junior women’s curling championship at the Minnedosa Curling Club. Arnal posted a 5-2 record in pool play to make the playoffs.

Vandepoele went on to drop an 8-3 decision to Winnipeg’s Shannon Birchard in last night’s provincial final, scoring three in the first end and never looking back. Birchard and her St. Vital Curling Club team of third Selena Kaatz, second Kristin MacCuish and lead Mariah Mondor, will now head to Napanee, Ont., for junior women’s nationals from Feb. 4-12.
