The Workers Compensation Board has a new Brandon presence after officially opening a regional office at Renaissance Station on Monday

“The (Brandon and District) Labour Council really wanted to see a regional Workers Compensation Board presence out here and it is here now,” Premier Greg Selinger said at the opening ceremony from the crowded lobby of the office at 457 Ninth St.

“We said we’d do this before the election, and now it’s done, so tick on that box of election promises made.”

More than 30 people were present, several of them standing outside because they did not fit into the lobby, at the ribbon-cutting for the office that will serve southwestern Manitoba as well as the Parkland region as far north as Swan River.

Selinger said there will be cost savings to Manitobans filing claims with the Workers Compensation Board in the form of reduced travel.

“Whether it’s Maple Leaf Foods, or construction activities or agriculture activities, there are so many things going on here and this organization will make a difference and it will fully partner with all aspects of the community to ensure we get the results that allow this community to grow.”

The Brandon office is managed by regional director Dan Robertson, the former general manager of the Keystone Centre who was hired by the Workers Compensation Board in May. The office currently employs 15 people, 12 who are Brandon residents.

Speaking on behalf of the vacationing Mayor Shari Decter Hirst, acting mayor Murray Blight welcomed the government agency to the city.

“It’s a great profile for our city,” Blight said. “It’s a benefit and we thank you for coming to our city.”

The office will increase Westman and Parkland residents’ access to key services, Workers Compensation Board president and CEO Winston Maharaj said.

“There are now three offices for the Workers Compensation Board, and I think we should be very proud of that,” Maharaj said, adding Thompson has the other regional office. “I am confident this office will provide excellent, one-on-one service to our important stakeholders in the west.”

Both Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell and Brandon West Progressive Conservative MLA Reg Helwer were present, along with city councillors Garth Rice (South Centre) and Jan Chaboyer (Green Acres).
