Brenden Walker was a natural choice as the first star Wednesday night.

The Brandon forward had a natural hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the game, as the Wheat Kings finished off a road trip through the Western Hockey League’s Central Division with a 4-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Walker and his line with Mike Ferland (one goal, one assist) and Mark Stone (two assists) produced seven points and every Brandon goal.

“I think those guys just stepped up all through the trip here and scored some big goals for us,” Wheat Kings assistant coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said. “It’s good to see those guys are kinda feeling it right now. … Those guys are going to contribute every time they get the puck in the right places and that’s what they did tonight.”

The Wheat Kings took advantage of a fortunate bounce to open the scoring in the first period as the puck caromed off the end boards and into the Hurricanes’ crease, where it bounced off the pad of Lethbridge goalie Liam Liston, with Walker getting credit for tucking it into the net.

Walker added another only 21 seconds into the second period, then completed the hat trick 11 minutes later.

Brody Sutter and Graham Hood of the Hurricanes made it interesting with goals late in the second period, but Ferland gave the Wheat Kings some insurance in the third, stealing the puck in the neutral zone and wristing a shot into the top corner above Liston’s glove. At the other end of the ice, Brandon goalie Corbin Boes stopped all 20 shots he faced in the final period and 39 in the game.

After going 2-1 on the trip, the Wheat Kings (30-26-1-2) play 10 of their last 13 games at Westman Place, including home dates Friday and Saturday with the Prince Albert Raiders (7:30, both nights).

“I think the whole road trip was good for us,” Gylywoychuk said. “I think that we got some valuable points going into three hard buildings and I think it was a good way to head into the weekend at home for us.”

ONE-TIMERS: Liston made 28 saves for the Hurricanes, who fell to 22-36-0-1 … Brandon needed to play D Dylan Kuczek up front to round out three forward lines, with C Kevin Sundher (upper body) and C/RW Jason Swyripa (lower body) added to the injury list. Swyripa had started his career by playing 136 straight games, including playoffs … Brandon also scratched LW Alessio Bertaggia (upper body), LW Dominick Favreau (upper body), C Tyrel Seaman (concussion) and G Curtis Honey … Everett named Souris native Garry Davidson their new general manager on Wednesday.
