WASAGAMING — Thousands of Wasagaming Campground sites were reserved this week through Riding Mountain National Park’s reservation system.
“Our reservations were up 62 per cent over last year’s launch date,” said Richard Dupuis, Visitor Service Manager for the park. “The park’s reservation service opened (Monday) morning at 7 a.m. and by 10 a.m., we had surpassed the 2011 total made by the same time last year.
“Our quality and variety of camping services, along with the new oTENTik tents and successes in our programming and events seem to have all contributed to this ”
A total of 20,115 camping nights were booked through the reservation system last season for Wasagaming Campground.
“We want to provide families the best opportunities to enjoy Riding Mountain National Park’s campgrounds and services,” Dupuis said.“Our camping offers some of the best and we want people to experience our park, so we make it easy through our reservation system.”
Meanwhile, park officials are gung-ho about the new tents, which are exclusive to Parks Canada.
“Our new oTENTik tents resemble a traditional prospector tent, but offer a more spacious and comfortable experience,” Dupuis said.
“The tent has a wooden frame with canvas covering a wood laminate floor, equipped with beds, lantern, table and seating that sleeps up to six.”
The Wasagaming Campground will open May 1, while Lake Audy, Whirlpool, Deep Lake and Moon Lake are slated to be open for the May Long weekend.
The May long weekend will be liquor free in all park campgrounds.
If you missed opening day, campsite reservations can be made at pccamping.ca or by calling 1-877-737-3783.
Here are a few things to look for this summer in Riding Mountain National Park:
• Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra outdoor performance at Clear Lake — June 30.
• Canada Day Celebrations (free admission) — July 1.
• RCMP Musical Ride in Onanole — July 29.
• Wasagaming Weekend — Aug 10-12.
