Why do I pay school taxes?
Regarding the busing issue for shop/home economics classes for Grades 7 and 8: When my teen took those classes, the schools where he had to go were not on a direct bus route that would have gotten him to his classes on time. So guess who had to drive him to and from those special interest classes all winter? Yup, me. I didn’t coddle him — he did take his bike or walked in warmer weather. Some of my colleagues have had to do the same thing this year, and it’s very disruptive for employers. The “host” schools are never next door to the “home” schools, hence the multi-bus routes. In principle, the city bus offer is nice, but it just doesn’t work. I hope this new school board will get to the bottom of this issue and come to a reasonable, safe, affordable resolution for all involved. My next child is gearing up to start shop and home economics next year, I hope I won’t have to take banked time from work to play taxi driver again. Isn’t this one of the reasons I pay school taxes?
Make her pay
I was furious when I read the article “Teen Pleads Guilty To Series Of Crimes.” She won’t have to pay for the damages because she has no source of income? Come on, has no one heard of a job? I got a job at age 13, my son got a job at age 14 and makes good money working weekends and after school. Maybe getting off the streets and working is just what this girl needs, and having to give her wages away to pay for the damage she caused might just have an impact.
Give me one reason
Well, I certainly agree with the person that objected to taxpayers funding dog parks. Maybe one dog owner could submit one reason why the taxpayers should give them a special park that is only usable by them and their foul animals.
No one showing support
Regarding James O’Connor’s Editor’s Notebook column, the feds certainly didn’t think that the Strand project was worthy of taxpayers money, did they? If the people of our city had thought for one minute that this was a good thing, someone would have donated money, an individual or an organization, as has happened with other projects in this city. As for BFMAS and the people who support the arts in the city, did we see just one person pony up some cash? Kind of tells a story right there, doesn’t it?
Ticket fiascos not just Jets related
When I see how many public officials receive Jets tickets on the public purse I am reminded about the Grey Owl Dinner at ACC. How many public officials receive free tickets thanks to us taxpayers while people with money to pay are left out? Perhaps ACC could make this information public.
