Construction of the new Dood Cristall Family YMCA on Princess Avenue is on time and on budget, says CEO Lon Cullen.
Cullen, who showed Premier Greg Selinger around the bones of the facility during his stop in Brandon on Wednesday afternoon, says the construction is progressing well, and staff should be able to move in by April or May of next year.
Following the move, the old structure will be demolished with landscaping to follow.
“Once we get this demolished, it will be another two or three months, because they have to take it down, pave it and do all the landscaping around the outside,” Cullen said.
“We’ll be totally done by no later than Thanksgiving, is what we’re hoping.”
Cullen says the Brandon YMCA’s Strengthening Our Core capital campaign has raised more than $5 million from friends of the YMCA and the community of Brandon.
Through its partnership with the Y, the city will contribute $4 million in upfront capital to the project and then contribute $100,000 each year in operating dollars, while the province and federal governments will kick in $4 million and $2.4 million, respectively.
The final tally on construction, including other incidental fees, is expected to reach about $18.5 million.
While the money is in place to finish construction, Cullen says continued fundraising efforts are now focused on reducing the size of the mortgage on the new facility.
