Neepawa’s Halli Krzyzaniak brought home more than just a silver medal from the Canadian under-18 women’s hockey championship in Dawson Creek, B.C.

The 17-year-old captain of Team Manitoba was named the tournament’s most valuable player and the top defenceman while leading her team to a berth in the national final, falling 4-2 to Ontario Blue in the gold-medal game on Sunday afternoon. Manitoba went 2-1 in pool play, then beat Team B.C. 4-1 in the semifinals — with Krzyzaniak scoring the game-winner — to advance to the championship final for the first time in the tournament’s 12-year history.

The 5-foot-9 Krzyzaniak, who plays for the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna, B.C., had one goal and one assist. She has verbally committed to accept a full scholarship at the University of North Dakota and is expected to finalize her letter of intent when the early signing period opens on Wednesday.
