Our Christmas tree was put up early this year (by a long shot for me normally), and I have to say the early holiday liveliness at night makes me smile a little inside. I don’t tend to blast the house with decorations each holiday — just a few little neat and cheerful items tucked about the living room and dining room and that’s about it… just a sprinkling. If you’re wondering what some of the hot trends this December are when it comes to baubles, decorations, and trimmings, read on for some merry inspiration.
THEME TREES
Snowmen, snowflakes, big bows, jingle bells — pick a theme and run with it! If you’re in the market for new tree trimmings, why not stick to a single theme and collect a bunch of ornaments and decor pieces in the same genre — the effect will be fun and totally unexpected.
DIY
Websites like Pinterest are teeming with images and great ideas from Pinners that have come up with clever and creative ways to put a spin on traditional decor, and they’re fantastic. A garland made of bunches of colourful glass balls, soft greenery nestled into old milk jugs, sparkly ornaments strung with ribbons hanging in front of a picture window. Have a peek at what others are cooking up in their own Christmas kitchens this year and give it a shot.
AU NATUREL
I’ve always liked a bit of this style for its simplicity and clean aesthetic in my home each winter. If you’re not all into the fuss and muss of typical commercial holiday decor, you can look more to nature and warm and inviting textures to cozy up with on long winter nights. Twigs, pinecones, cranberries, candles, wintry boughs, holly, birch wood, and lambs wool are all delicious natural elements you can incorporate for a more grounded and earthy approach.
TURQUOISE & LIME
It was a hot combo last year, and it’s back for another season: pairing turquoise, teal, azure, and peacock blue with wasabi, khaki, lime, and kelly green makes for a wonderful eye popping mix of fresh and lush colour — perfect for those of you that would like to try something different this year.
VINTAGE
You can see this inspiration everywhere you look. A throwback to the past is one of the hottest Christmas must-haves this year. Weathered hand stenciled apple crates, old world wintry signage, tin ornaments, hand crafted paper goods — bringing in some of the old helps to warm and endear the new.
TWINKLE
We’ve likely all tried the twinkle-lights-in-a-bowl trick by now, but why not nestle some battery operated minis into old wine bottles on the mantle, or wrap them around birch branches in a corner basket for a fresh take on some much desired evening shimmer? Soft and ambient lighting will make your spaces sumptuous and oh-so incredibly inviting.
