Women’s Hockey
The Brandon AtoMc Yellowjackets won the championship title for their division in the Rural Manitoba Female Hockey League for the second straight year. The Yellowjackets took the best-of-three series against the Foxwarren Foxes in two games straight, winning 5-2 on the Friday night at the Sportsplex, and again on the road in Foxwarren Saturday with a 3-1 nail-biter.
The Pembina Valley Hawks celebrated winning the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League championship on Sunday, March 24 in Hartney. The defending national champion Hawks defeated the Westman Wildcats 1-0 behind a 26-save shutout performance from Glenboro native Brittni Mowat and a goal by Cassidy Carels of Bruxelles. The Hawks now face the Saskatchewan league champions April 5-7 for the right to play in the Esso Cup national championship.
Synchronized Swimming
The Brandon Wheat Queens synchronized skating team were gold medal winners at the Crocus Invitational in Morden on March 16. Nine other teams competed in the elementary division.
Hockey
Wheat Kings raise cash for kids
The Brandon Wheat Kings raised close to $6,000 in two community outreach programs during the 2012-13 regular season.
In addition to generating more than $4,700 in this year’s Westman Dreams for Kids Campaign, Big Brothers and Sisters of Brandon will receive a cheque from ScotiaMcLeod as a result of this year’s Saves for Kids Program.
The Wheat Kings scored 189 goals this past season, helping to raise money and profile for the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, which was formed in 1991 to help make dreams come true for western Manitoba children suffering from life threatening diseases.
“Goals for Kids” was established the following year and has raised more than $300,000 since that time.
As in past years, several local businesses served as corporate sponsors this year. Each time, the Wheat Kings scored a goal or Brandon recorded a shutout, these sponsors would donate at least $25 to the foundation.
The Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation is a non-profit, local registered organization dedicated to granting dreams to seriously ill children throughout western Manitoba.
Among the local businesses participating in this year’s program were Crocus Credit Union, C & C Construction, Brandon Source for Sports, Paterson Patterson Wyman and Abel, Morningstar Metal, EMCO Waterworks, Dr. Brian Kiliwnik, Precision Toyota, Roy Johnston and Co., J & G Homes, Forbidden Flavours, Wheat City Roofing, Mobile One Marine, Total Eye Care, Advance Auto Body, Jason Kreiser of the Keystone Centre, Al Rosendaal of Investors Group and NAPA.
Roblin’s Jayce Hawryluk, the Wheat Kings MNP Rookie of the Year, led the team with 18 goals this season, followed by Eric Roy and Tim McGauley with 17 each and current Spokane Chiefs left-winger Alessio Bertaggia with 16. The Swiss sniper was leading the club in scoring when he was traded to the Western Conference in January.
In addition to this year’s Goals and Saves for Kids campaigns, the hockey club partnered with PhysioFirst to help raise money for several local charities through their Saturday night Chuck-a-Puck events.
Among the many charities to benefit this year were the Brandon Kidney Foundation, Food for Thought, KidSport, Funds for Furry Friends, the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex, Sea Cadets, Manitoba Special Olympics and Waves of Hope Brandon.
Senior Men’s Basketball
BeezKneez won its second straight Brandon Senior Men’s Basketball League championship with an 89-78 win over Extreme Clean on March 24 at Assiniboine Community College. BeezKneez finished second in the regular season with a 10-5 record. Stevens Marcelin had 34 points in the final for BeezKneez, while Matt DeGagne had 17 and Adam Hartman added 12.
Curling
Meet the provincial under-18 men’s curling champions, skipped by Braden Calvert of Carberry. They went 2-1 in their preliminary round before beating Colin Kurz 8-6 in the semifinal and Matt Dunstone’s team 9-8 in the final. Dunstone wasn’t at the event as he was overseas winning a world junior bronze medal. Cole Peters (a spare) skipped the Dunstone team instead. In the photo (L-R): Curl Manitoba representative Matt Pilloud, Braden Calvert, third Shayne MacGranachan from Brandon, second Cody Cherepuschak from Brandon, lead Max VanKommer from Carberry, and coach Grant Calvert from Carberry.
