Voters in Brandon-Souris will have one more name to choose from when they cast their ballot on Nov. 25.
Boissevain resident and former United States marine Frank Godon confirmed on Tuesday that he will be the Libertarian Party candidate, just six days before the Elections Canada deadline of Nov. 4.
“My reason is to give the people of Brandon-Souris another option,” Godon said.
Godon was initially going to seek the Liberal nomination, as he announced back in September. However, he withdrew from the race a few weeks later due to family concerns and because he believed his opponent, Rolf Dinsdale, was the “better candidate.”
But after much consideration, Godon decided he wanted to throw his hat back in the ring.
“Talking with people I found that many of them, they’re either not going to vote because of what the Conservative party has done and of course what’s going on now (nationally),” he said. “I just started thinking, these people deserve a chance to use their vote, that’s our democratic right here in Canada.”
Godon said his ailing mother is in the hospital where she is getting good care, and after speaking with his father and wife, he was encouraged to get back in the race.
“People say I’m just jumping from party to party, no, I was Libertarian going for a Liberal position,” he said. “I’m … going back to my core beliefs and working with the Libertarian party here.”
The vision of the Libertarian Party of Canada is “less government, lower taxes, more freedom.” Founded in 1973, the party achieved registered status in 1979. The party’s membership declined over time and the status was revoked, but it was re-registered with Elections Canada in 2004.
Currently, there are no Libertarians in the House of Commons or the Senate.
Godon received 150 signatures in support of his nomination, and submitted his paperwork Monday. He received notification Tuesday that he was an acceptable candidate.
“I’m giving them a chance to have a protest vote,” he said. “Especially those disgruntled Conservatives, and it’s true their ability to choose was taken away from them when a nomination wasn’t properly handled.”
Godon will be competing for the Brandon-Souris seat against Liberal candidate Rolf Dinsdale, NDP candidate Cory Szczepanski, Green candidate David Neufeld and Conservative candidate Larry Maguire.
