yler Grumpelt came into the Sun Life Financial Junior Challenge feeling like he could fly under the radar, and that’s exactly what he did.

Grumpelt and his Brandon Curling Club team of Dale Guild, Max Van Kommer and Braden Orchard pulled off some upsets to reach Sunday’s men’s division semifinals before falling 7-2 to Winnipeg’s Kyle Doering.

Doering went on to win the men’s final 6-5 at the Brandon Curling Club over fellow Winnipegger Cole Peters in an extra end. Doering won the top prize of $2,500 in the men’s event, while Peters walked away with $1,200.

For their efforts, the Grumpelt team took home $700 and a lot of confidence as they now turn their focus to earning a spot a junior provincials.

“I’m pretty happy actually,” said the 17-year-old skip from Gladstone. “The last game didn’t go the way we wanted to, but we made it this far against some pretty good teams. I’m pretty satisfied.”

Grumpelt defeated Winnipeg’s Ty Dilello and defending North Dakota state champion Tim Hodak to go 2-1 in his pool and reach the quarter-finals. There he ran into defending American champion Korey Dropkin. Grumpelt stole five points in the game to earn an 8-1 victory and a trip to the semifinals.

Minnesota’s Cory Christensen, the 2012 American champion, beat defending Manitoba champion Shannon Birchard 6-2 in the women’s final and the $2,500 grand prize.

Birchard eliminated Carberry’s Kylee Calvert with an 8-4 win in the quarter-finals. Calvert went 2-1 in the round robin.

Jake Vukich from Seattle beat Winnipeg’s Rachel Burtnyk 7-2 in the consolation final to win the $500 prize.

Brandon’s Shayne MacGranachan reached the junior men’s consolation final, but lost 4-3 to Vukich when his last rock picked out of his hand.

Carberry native Braden Calvert, who skips a team out of Winnipeg, lost a tiebreaker to fall into the consolation side of the draw. He reached the men’s semifinal before falling 6-2 to Vukich.

Brandon’s Kaitlyn Payette and Carberry’s Austin Mustard, who skips a team out of Portage la Prairie, both went winless.
