Local businesses decorate Christmas trees which will be auctioned off to those in attendance and the tree, decorations and gifts will be delivered to a family in need. Team registration at 5 p.m.; decorating at 5:30 p.m. and auction at 6:15 p.m. Admission is $3. All proceeds from this event will benefit community needs through the United Way’s 2013 campaign.

• 4:30 p.m. — Operation Christmas Blessing, Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund, takes place at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa. Features Filipino and Canadian food, entertainment, silent auction and 50/50 draw. A silver collection will be taken at the door. All proceeds will be matched by the Canadian Red Cross.

• 7 p.m. — It’s Trivia Night at Elkhorn Resort. This is a fundraiser for Friends and Biosphere Reserve organizations. Form a team of friends and show off your knowledge. • Lady of the Lake — Saturday features the one-man band of Reigh Kilbride at 7:30 p.m.

• Houstons Niteclub — Start the weekend early on Thursday with the ACCSA Ugly Sweater Christmas Party with your chance to win tickets to see Hedley. Also 26.5 cent wings in the loft from 7-11 p.m. and DJ Razor and his video show. Friday features the United Way Christmas Tree Auction at 5 p.m. and when this great event is over, we have more to offer. The Firefighter Social will be rocking Friday night with music by RockBox. Three-for-one appetizers from 4 p.m. to midnight. Saturday has the hoedown meal special, only $6 for a meal and a drink and happy hour until 10 p.m with DJ Lambo closing out the weekend in style.

At the galleries and museums

• The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba — Hours: Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday until 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. The ninth annual Members Show and Sale takes place in the Main Gallery until Dec. 19 including works by Chris Reid, Fay Jelly, Elaine Rounds, Curt Shoultz, Colin Corneau and many, many more. Opening reception is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. In the Community Gallery: We celebrate the life and art of long-time volunteer and artist Mef Simpson, who passed away in late July at the age of 85. The show and sale runs until Saturday.

• The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum at CFB Shilo — The museum is closed for the season and will reopen in the new year on Jan. 13.

• The Daly House Museum — Original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly, which was built in 1882. The exhibit “Harry Potter’s World, Renaissance, Science, Magic and Medicine” runs until Dec. 28. It features information about the scientific culture that J.K. Rowling used as the basis for her series of novels. Guests will have a chance to have their photo taken on a “Wanted Wizard” poster. Hogwart’s costuming is optional, but encouraged. Children aged eight and up can create their own wands at a workshop on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost is $10 and pre-registration is required. Upcoming: Special Christmas tours of the museum on Dec. 14 features Victorian Christmas traditions and refreshments. Tours at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Cost is $15 and pre-registration is required. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum — Come visit and see a vast collection of historical military items. • The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum — Hours are 1 p.m.-4 p.m, seven days a week. The museum is Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of the history of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Check out our RCAF Memorial Wall display in the museum’s hangar. The first granite panel of 54 is on display, along with a scale model of the completed memorial which will feature more than 19,000 fatalities with a larger-than-life bronze statue representing the fallen.

• Glen P. Sutherland Gallery — “Pirates from Outer Space,” a mixed media exhibition showcasing the work of Brandon University’s Fine Arts students runs until Saturday.

• The Brandon General Museum and Archives — On the ground floor of the old Manitoba Telephone building at 19 Ninth St. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. See the B.J. Hales collection of Manitoba wildlife, which he collected more than 75 years ago featuring more than 320 migratory birds. Come by for Family Days held at the museum every Saturday from 1-2 p.m. until Dec. 14. Families with children (Grades K-5) are welcome to explore and learn about history of Brandon together.
