Brandonite Dustin Schneider had a pair of kills as he helped Canada win its first match at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Poland on Wednesday.
Schneider, a setter, also had four digs, 18 running sets and 50 still sets as Canada, ranked 15th in the world, upset eighth-ranked Bulgaria 3-2
(17-25, 25-17, 20-25, 26-24,
15-8) in Gdansk.
Schneider came off the bench in the first set and started the final four as Canada improved to 1-1 and sits in fourth place in Pool C with two points.The top four teams in the six-team pool advance to the next round.
Rivers’ Toon Van Lankvelt did not play in the match. He appeared in one set in Monday’s loss to Russia and recorded one kill.
Gavin Schmitt led Canada with 18 kills and three blocks, while Nicholas Hoag had 15 kills and Adam Simac added five blocks.
Tsvetan Sokolov led Bulgaria (1-1) with 19 kills and a pair of aces.
The tournament continues for the Canadians on Friday when they take on Egypt (0-2), which is ranked 17th in the world.
