With statistics showing one in three teens have admitted to recent bullying, the PAWS Across Canada tour is set to teach anti-bullying in communities throughout Westman as part of national Bully Prevention Month.
Featuring spokes-pup “Toby,” the lovable Chesapeake Bay retriever, and his sidekick, motivational speaker and best-selling author Charmaine Hammond, Team Toby hopes to inspire schools, communities and individuals with messages of kindness, workplace respect and community resilience.
Hammond and Toby will be presenting workshops in schools and classrooms, and donating Team Toby’s anti-bullying books for curriculum use.
Today they’ll visit Rivers Elementary School, Minnedosa and Rapid City, followed by an interview on WCG-TV. On Wednesday, they head to Douglas School, Onanole, Minnedosa for a second presentation, and touring around Brandon.
Team Toby is thanking Super 8 Brandon for hosting their stay in Brandon, as well as the Paw Resort and Wellness Centre, Wheat City Vet Clinic, Minnedosa Credit Union, Super Thrifty Pharmacy and the Rivers Banner for helping to raise funds for the school presentations and to support Funds for Furry Friends animal rescue.
“This tour is our mission to build a kinder world, ‘one paw, one person’ at a time,” Hammond said. “We have seen firsthand how Toby’s story and message, and his presence in school presentations, has provided a powerful and memorable learning experience for students.
“Dogs are great examples of what unconditional acceptance looks like, and how kindness to animals in fact encourages kindness to people.”
A former correctional officer, Hammond wrote a story about her adopted dog Toby in “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” which captures the impact of Toby when he became a hospital-therapy dog.
Despite his antics and the trail of destruction he often left in his wake, his unconditional love for the patients he interacted with inspired a change in Hammond’s own life, leading her to pen the bestselling, award-winning book, “On Toby’s Terms,” as well as children’s books “Toby the Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends” and “Toby the Pet Therapy Dog Says Be a Buddy Not a Bully.”
