The Brandon Wheat Kings rode three second-period goals to a 6-3 road win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night in the Western Hockey League.
With two straight wins on their Saskatchewan road trip, the Wheat Kings (21-5-2-0) hold an 11-point lead over the second-place Regina Pats in the East Division.
"We worked hard (and) we had good pace to our game tonight, I thought," said Wheat Kings head coach/general manager Kelly McCrimmon, whose team has points in five straight games (4-0-1-0). "I liked how we played."
Nolan Patrick had a goal and an assist, while Tim McGauley scored his fourth game-winner in the last five contests to stretch his goal-scoring streak to five games. Eric Roy, Duncan Campbell, Colton Waltz and Reid Duke also scored for Brandon.
The Raiders (13-14-0-0) had their winning streak snapped at five games despite two goals from Jordan Tkatch, who also set up Jayden Hart’s tally.
Tkatch opened the scoring, but the Wheat Kings responded with six straight goals, capped by third-period strikes only 37 seconds apart by Duke and Patrick that chased Raiders netminder Rylan Parenteau from the game. Brandon managed only one shot the rest of the way on Parenteau’s replacement, Nick McBride, while Prince Albert potted a pair of goals.
McCrimmon said the third period was Brandon’s one notable blemish.
"We took three minor penalties," McCrimmon said of the final frame. "They scored a power-play goal and a goal right after, so we weren’t as good in the third."
ONE-TIMERS: LW Tanner Kaspick and D Macoy Erkamps had two assists apiece for Brandon … Wheat Kings G Jordan Papirny made 30 saves, while Parenteau stopped 24 shots … Brandon was 1-for-3 on the power play. Prince Albert was 1-for-4 … McGauley has seven goals and four assists in his last five games … Brandon LW Rihards Bukarts (lower body) missed his second straight game after being hurt in practice earlier in the week, while D Kale Clague (upper body), LW Ty Lewis (arm) and D Mark Matsuba also sat out … The Wheat Kings will visit the Pats on Wednesday.
