A CAA Manitoba survey found that nearly half of the province are not prepared for a winter emergency in their cars.

“If you’re driving in Manitoba in winter, an emergency kit is a must-have,” said Angèle Young, a CAA Manitoba public affairs specialist. “No matter if your drive in the city or rural areas, every motorist should be prepared.”

Along with having extra winter gear like mitts and a toque available in your vehicle, Young says that emergency kits should have three types of items:

  • Survival, to keep you alive. Things like food, water, blankets and a basic first aid kit
  • Visibility, to help you be seen and found. Items such as flares, reflectors or banners.
  • Tools, to fix it yourself. Materials like a screwdriver, tape, kitty litter or a shovel.

Pre-packaged emergency kits can be purchased at any CAA Manitoba location, and a coupon for up to $8 off is available on the CAA Manitoba Facebook page until Dec. 8.

To avoid being stuck in the cold, CAA Manitoba is also reminding drivers to check road conditions before they travel, to ensure that service is up-to-date on their vehicles, and to plug in their block heaters if temperatures drop below -18ºC.
