Many Westman communities that have fibre-optic Internet service on MTS can enjoy some of the best streaming video service on the continent, according to Netflix.
But other MTS customers languish near the bottom, if they’re accessing the Internet through older DSL connections.
The streaming-video giant says that MTS’s fibre-optic service provides the third-best Netflix experience in Canada, with an average speed of 3.28 megabits per second — tied with No. 2 Bell Aliant, and just behind Bell Canada’s leading score of 3.34.
That result also shows MTS customers with fibre-optic Internet get a better Netflix experience than any American ISP provides — Verizon’s fibre-optic network tops the American charts at 3.27 Mbps.
And, as Netflix noted in a release about the speed analysis, Verizon was one of the American ISPs that demanded payments for higher speed, a practice that Netflix says interferes with the long-term health of the Internet.
But it’s not all good news for MTS customers. Those who are streaming Netflix on DSL connections will see speeds of just 2.26 Mbps — the third-worst in the country.
According to MTS, fibre-optic Internet connections are available in Dauphin, Neepawa, Carberry, Minnedosa and Killarney. It also has a fibre-optic loop in Brandon that serves some areas of the city.
Westman Communications Group’s cable Internet service was not assessed by Netflix, but in general, cable Internet services were clustered around the middle of the pack.
