Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 09/05/2015 (4014 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
It is great to have diversity, especially when it comes to restaurants. While we certainly have a wide range of wonderful restaurants to choose from in Brandon, it seems like you can always think of something that is missing.
It has been quite a number of years since The Golden Perogy and Harry’s Ukrainian Kitchen existed, which is often where people would go when they were looking for a good Ukrainian meal. And while we all love to go to the Ukrainian Pavilion during the Lieutenant Governor’s Winter Festival, enjoying Ukrainian food just once a year, well … just isn’t enough!
That’s why I’m pleased to be able to feature the Grechaniuk family in my column this week. Roman and his wife Oleksandra are the proud, new owners of Ukrainian Cuisine.
“The idea of opening a restaurant has been something that I have thought about for a long, long time. I’ve probably been dreaming about it my whole life,” Roman Grechaniuk said.
Ukrainian Cuisine is located in the food court of The Town Centre. It opened just one week ago. Roman is the main chef, while Oleksandra, their oldest son, Vladislav, and their godmothers will all help to run this family business.
Immigrating from Ukraine six years ago, the Grechaniuks look forward to sharing their delicious meals with those who enjoy Ukrainian food. The menu provides a good selection of traditional dishes including perogies, cabbage rolls, borscht, homemade sausage, nalysnyky, meatballs, ribs, a variety of salads and a unique dessert menu featuring pompushky (one of my favourites)!
“It is a full-service restaurant and we also do catering. We will offer school and business lunch service, as well as dinner, and we’ll also have a delivery service,” Grechaniuk said.
As well, they will be selling frozen perogies and cabbage rolls for customers to take home and prepare for themselves.
Ukrainian Cuisine will be open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Follow them on Twitter @ukrainiancuisine, check out their website, ukrainiancuisine.biz or visit them in The Town Centre.
New Home, Familiar Neighbourhood
It has been almost two months since Fountain Tire moved into their digs, just 15 years after first opening in Brandon.
Store owner Conrad Porath said the move wasn’t very far, literally just down the street from 1510 18th St. North to their new location at 1866 18th St. North, but it went very smooth and now they are pleased to be settled in.
“We had really outgrown the old location and needed more room so we could better serve all our customers,” Porath said.
If you’ve ever heard or seen a Fountain Tire commercial, you’ll know that they do more than just tires. At the Brandon location they also have a full mechanical shop with two mechanics working Monday to Saturday and they have four service trucks.
“We have two trucks to service farm tires and loader tires, and two service trucks to look after all of our other commercial and consumer needs,” Porath said.
Fountain Tire in Brandon employs 14 people and since its official opening on March 16, everyone has been enjoying their new space.
“The best thing about our new location is the showroom. We have had numerous comments on how nice the mural on the wall is and how bright the showroom is.”
For more information, visit fountaintire.com or check out its new location on 18th Street North.
And, a very special Mother’s Day greeting to all those who are fortunate enough to have that title. I hope you have a splendid day!
