The Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex has been awarded the “Field of Dreams” grant from the Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The committee announced the grant of $123,733 on Thursday morning.
“It is fantastic to get such huge support for the completion of all the diamonds, which we always saw as the key to making this facility viable” said Brett Turner, project chair.
The complex is named in memory of a local athlete who died in an accident in 2009 while attending Dickinson State University in North Dakota on a softball scholarship. When completed, the complex will include four adult diamonds and four youth diamonds. It is expected that two adult and four youth diamonds will be ready for play next year. Turner said the Field of Dreams funding will play a significant role in completing the next two adult diamonds.
“We are excited to have the infrastructure to support softball in our community and to host major tournaments. These events generate additional funds that will be re-invested into the complex. This generous donation from Jays Care Foundation has certainly helped us realize our own Field of Dreams!” said Nancy McPherson, fundraising chair.
