A car struck by a train near Kemnay was driven onto the tracks by a drunk driver, police say.

Brandon RCMP Corp. Mike Boychuk agreed that the case was an unusual one.

"I still scratch my head when people hit trains on the road, never mind driving down the railway track," Boychuk said.

Emergency crews were called to the Canadian Pacific Railway line north of Kemnay on Saturday around 5:40 a.m.

Police say the investigation showed that a 2008 Pontiac G6 was driven onto the tracks, and then driven a short distance east along the line where it stopped.

An eastbound train ran into the back of the car at about 65 km/h, launching it into the ditch north of the tracks.

The man who was driving the car was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He appeared to be OK as, at the hospital, he asked a male nurse for a kiss.

Police don’t believe the driver’s actions were an attempt at suicide. Rather, alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Boychuk said charges are being considered against a 25-year-old man from the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
