A dedicated Brandon politician who served 30 years as Brandon East MLA was honoured in the Manitoba legislature on Monday.
A moment of silence was held in memory of Len Evans, who passed away in January at the age of 86.
“With his passing, the Evans family lost an extraordinary father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather,” said Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell. “The City of Brandon lost a legendary member of the legislative assembly, and I lost a dear friend and mentor.”
During his time in office, Evans became a champion of local infrastructure development and was instrumental in redrawing the city’s boundaries to include surrounding municipalities. He also played a large role in finishing the construction of the Keystone Centre. In 2010, the province of Manitoba named the new addition to Assiniboine Community College’s North Hill campus the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology.
Evans was posthumously awarded with Manitoba’s Order of the Buffalo Hunt.
“Len was proud to be a democratic socialist, a man who believed in the power of the state to transform society and build a better world for all people,” Caldwell said. “Much of what I know about serving the people of Brandon East, I learned from Len Evans.”
