Marcus Sekundiak’s big decision was all about getting better and winning.

The 16-year-old prospect decided against playing in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League last season, opting instead to play in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League with Oak Park, who went on to win the city title.

He played bantam AAA with the Central Plains Capitals.

“It was going to be an older team with 14 Grade 12s so I knew that it was going to be a fast-paced team in contention for a championship,” he said. “We ended up winning the city and it was a lot easier with the driving, not having to drive an hour to Portage. It was nice getting on the ice more.”

He enjoyed a terrific season, scoring 22 goals in 22 games and adding 19 assists. In seven playoff games, he had eight more goals and two assists.

The Oak Bluff product continued the hard work in the summer. Every week he skated three times a week and did four dryland sessions. The results showed in rookie camp, when he was one of the top scorers.

“It’s been good,” Sekundiak said. “I feel way better coming back this year. I had a hard summer of preparing for this so it feels good to go out there and get some results.”

Sekundiak’s goal-scoring prowess isn’t exactly new. He tore up the bantam AAA league in 2014-15, his Western Hockey League draft year, scoring 30 goals in 30 games and adding 23 assists.

“I think I’m good with my speed,” Sekundiak said of his game. “I think that I can get around guys and I can finish, put the puck in the back of the net.”

The five-foot-10, 150-pounder is fine with the advanced pace that inevitably resulted when main camp opened — he scored twice on Friday morning — but suggests that he needs to get bigger.

If it doesn’t work out in Brandon this year, Sekundiak plans to try out for the Winnipeg Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Plan C would see him play in the RHA Nationals hockey program, a new hockey academy in Winnipeg.

“I know how much more that I have to put in to get to where all these guys are,” Sekundiak said. “I know the effort that takes and the commitment. I’m hoping that I’ll be here someday.”
