A 25-year-old man is in custody, accused of being impaired when he fled from police and crashed his car head-on into a van.
No one, including the fleeing driver, was hurt in the incident.
It began at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, when officers who were running a checkstop on the 400 block of Richmond Avenue spotted a Chevrolet Camaro speeding along Richmond.
An officer left the checkstop to track down the car, which was stopped on the 300 block of Park Avenue.
When the officer, who believed the driver had been drinking, asked him to step out of the vehicle, the suspect took off at high speed.
The officer pursued, but called off the chase when the suspect drove south on 18th Street in the northbound lane. The suspect driver kept going in the wrong lane and collided with a northbound van at 18th Street and Louise Avenue.
The van and car were both heavily damaged, but two people in the van and the suspect weren’t hurt.
Tests placed the suspect’s alcohol-blood level at twice the legal limit.
He’s charged with impaired driving, flight from police, dangerous driving and breach of undertaking. He was also wanted on a warrant for assault causing bodily harm.
