The very same passion that drove married couple Debbie and Wayne Gross to open Fitness Quest 17 years ago has inspired them to close the downtown Brandon fitness centre.
Dec. 31 marks Fitness Quest’s final day of operation at The Town Centre.
After some time cleaning out the space, Debbie plans on working as a personal trainer at Frederickson Performance Centre, which is expanding to accommodate some of Fitness Quest’s 700 members and staff of 19.
Debbie explained that her new position will allow her to devote more attention to her passion in personal training, rather than dividing her time amid the various tasks related to running a business.
Not that she hasn’t loved running Fitness Quest, she clarified.
A sign above the door reads “The Best Part of My Day,” and she stands by it.
“Everybody has become like my family, and I care where their health is going,” she said after a tour of the facility on Tuesday, during which she took several moments to say hello to whomever she passed by, addressing most of them by name.
Debbie’s passion in fitness dates back to the age of 16, when she faced a serious health issue that forced her to regain her strength from square one.
Wayne’s passion comes through his efforts in bodybuilding, which transferred to his role as co-ownership of Fitness Quest alongside his wife.
Debbie has been more hands-on over the years, devoting long hours to Fitness Quest, where she has taken pride in fostering a positive, family-like atmosphere.
“They walk in the door and they’re in their comfort zone, they’re in a place where they know everybody and they’re getting treated so well,” she said, offering that this is a feeling that she said is also shared among staff members.
In the midst of a Tuesday morning workout, Shaun Funk took a moment to reflect on his time at Fitness Quest.
He first came to Fitness Quest while playing volleyball with Brandon University, prior to the construction of the university’s centre, and has been coming back ever since.
“You get to know people here, you build community, so it’s going to be sad to see everybody spread throughout the city,” he said.
While many members are shifting over to Frederickson Performance Centre, Funk said that he’s uncertain as to where he’ll go next, noting that Fitness Quest’s downtown location has been ideal.
“Working out is way more than physical health, it’s community, it’s being able to take care of yourself here and the world around you,” Funk said. “I’m going to miss this place a lot.”
Fitness Quest’s closure will add a 12,000-square-foot hole in The Town Centre.
