Many businesses strive to be the best of the best, but few manage to achieve the status.

But with a lot of hard work and dedication, Brockie Donovan Funeral and Cremation Services was named just that, ranking near the top of more than 100 elite-rated funeral and cremation services in Canada and the United States, according to the Funeral Service Research Group.

“We knew we had a good year and that we were moving in the right direction. We had a lot of really good feedback from our families this year. We didn’t know how we were doing related to other funeral homes, so that was a bit of a surprise when we found out we were right near the top,” said Wade Lumbard, owner of Brockie Donovan. “It is quite the tribute to our staff and the great work that they do.”

FSRG surveys nearly 100,000 individuals across North America annually who experience the loss of a loved one. Brockie Donovan earned excellent ratings for overall satisfaction from 94 per cent of the customers that responded.

“Receiving 94 per cent is quite an achievement and displays the compassion that Brockie Donovan provides each family they serve,” director of FSRG Terrie Groeneman said in a statement. “In fact, Brockie Donovan showed the strongest improvement among all customers in its group.”

Brockie Donovan has procedures in place for every family they work with to ensure they are well taken care of, Lumbard said.

However, being a longtime family owned business — 102 years old — also adds to their success.

“My dad always said to look after the people first and the dollars and cents will kind of look after themselves,” Lumbard said. “Our focus is to help people through the most difficult time in their life. We have a sort of family feel here, very comforting for people when they come in. We deal with people the way we would want to be dealt with.”

Even though they are ecstatic with the recognition, they are still working on pinpointing areas they can improve on in a continuous effort to work toward 100 per cent overall satisfaction, Lumbard said.

“It puts a little more pressure on us … we’re always focused on getting to that 100 per cent customer satisfaction, it seems out of reach but I feel we can come even closer,” Lumbard said.
