As the temperatures warm, the Manitoba Summer Fair beckons.

What is considered the kickoff to summer around these parts returns today for its 135th occasion, swarming the Keystone Centre grounds in Brandon with a throng of thrill-seekers, dazzling entertainers and more than a few sweet tooths.

The fair will also burst with Canadian pride — especially this year.

In honour of the country’s 150th anniversary, 150 newcomers will officially be welcomed into the country, becoming citizens at a ceremony today at 2 p.m. in the UCT Pavilion.

Previously, the fair hosted ceremonies for approximately 100 citizens-to-be, but considering this year’s birthday bash, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba asked to boost the number.

“If there was 150, that would work,” remembered Ron Kristjansson, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, of the organization’s request.

“That’s a pretty neat feeling for us. We get to host a citizenship ceremony and then we invite them to join us on the midway for the day.”

If they stick around into the night, they can marvel at mounted police on horseback during the RCMP Musical Ride. The performances are slated for today and tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Every few years, schedules align and the horses from the musical ride are trotting at the Manitoba Summer Fair once again.

“It’s pretty hard to get much more Canadian than the RCMP musical ride,” Kristjansson said.

Apart from other new wrinkles like bringing back the cattle show, organizers are mainly keeping the favourites that make the five-day fair, which open today at 4 p.m., a success year after year.

You can count 39 midway rides, sideshow entertainment, children’s activities, mini chuckwagon races, a petting zoo and various horse shows among the festivities.

On Saturday, the Travellers’ Day Parade begins at 11 a.m., and at night, Canadian country music group The Road Hammers take the stage for 9 p.m.

The final day’s activities consist of a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., the classic car and bike show running from 12 p.m.-4 p.m., the demolition derby from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. and the youth cattle show at 3 p.m.

Every day, dogs will do wacky tricks for the Canine Stars show, while acrobats will dive from a height of several metres into a pool of water below at the Flying Fools High Divers performance.
