A Brandon man was taken into custody after a standoff with Brandon Police Monday night that lead into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Armed police officers swarmed a Brandon residence Monday evening after receiving a complaint a man was threatening another with a firearm.
A pair of officers, carrying rifles, was spotted running around the Leo Lot Community Garden, nestled east of New Era School between Louise Avenue and Fourth Street, at approximately 9:45 p.m. They stopped in a back alley beside the school, peering through a fence to look at a backyard in the 300 block of Fourth Street.
A woman nearby, speaking to herself, said the cops should let her talk to “him.” She would not divulge what might have brought police to the property.
Within a span of 20 minutes, the Brandon Police Service expanded their perimeter near the city’s downtown while rain poured, preventing traffic from crossing onto Fourth Street between Lorne and Louise avenues. Louise Avenue was also barricaded from Third and Sixth streets.
By 11:45 p.m., several police members and at least seven vehicles were continuing to secure the scene.
The Tactical Response Unit cleared the residence and located the suspect inside. At 4 a.m., the 40-year-old man was taken into custody and police searched the building, locating a firearm.
The man was arrested and additional charges are pending. Police continue to investigate.
