Jesse Powell has been canoeing across Canada this summer, and yesterday he paddled into Brandon.

Powell, a musician who’s just on the edge of his 39th year, said the experience so far has been beautiful.

“There’s hardships on this trip, but they’re just a spice. They enrich the experience,” Powell said. “This trip is full of jewels and gorgeous things and it’s all just enriched by the mosquitoes and the muck, and the occasional hailstorm. It makes the better parts shine brighter.”

Powell grew up in northwest Ontario. Now, working and living in Calgary, he decided to try to make it back to his childhood home by canoe. He brought sand from Banff, where he kicked off on June 3, to place in their family cabin.

He spent Saturday night just outside Brandon, close to where the Little Saskatchewan River meets the Assiniboine River. He was out of water when he happened upon some people fishing who offered him beer and fresh fish to eat.

“Southern Manitoba has been so beautiful,” Powell said. “These forests of oak and elm and willow, to be surrounded by trees the entire time has been so beautiful. It’s wonderful to see how beautiful the river is.”

Familiar to these types of adventures, Powell has also hitchhiked from Victoria to Calgary with his dog.

Like many other cross-country travellers, Powell said he has gotten by on the kindness of strangers, and dehydrated food courtesy of his mom.

He also said he enjoys the golden hour of each day.

“Every day has a beautiful hour where the sun is going down and everything turns to gold,” Powell said. “I’m happy at that point every single day.”
