A portion of Ninth Street is closed to pedestrians and vehicles due to overhead safety concerns emanating from the building safety.

The City of Brandon closed Ninth Street between Pacific Avenue and Rosser Avenue on Monday after “a portion of the cornice had partially detached from the structure,” forcing an emergency closure of pedestrian traffic along the westerly sidewalk, southbound traffic and all on-street parking.

A portion of a back lane in the area is also closed.

The city identified the building as located at 20 Ninth St., which is the site of the A.E. Mckenzie Co. Ltd. Seedmen buildings.

Following a city inspection of the building, a number of concerns were flagged regarding the building’s remaining facades.

“The closure will remain in effect until an assessment by the property owner’s engineer is received and reviewed by the City of Brandon Development Services Division,” according to a city press release.
