These people and pooches proved they could walk the walk for the Brandon Humane Society.

Approximately 150 people and their canine companions unleashed their shrewd charity skills Sunday morning, showing up to Kin Park with pledge forms — and sneakers — for the 16th edition of the Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon.

The event collars about $40,000 annually for the local shelter.

It’s no doggone secret why this four-legged fundraising initiative works, explained shelter manager Tracy Munn.

“We love our dogs, right?” she reasoned. “Everybody loves to showcase their dogs and support a good cause, and it’s a beautiful morning for this.”

Walkers took 30-40 minutes to take an exaggerated loop around Kin Park. They ended their leisurely stroll with a free barbecue and the chance to get signed autographs from members of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

A love of animals brought Trevor Dickie and Lindsay Edwards, and their corgi Dylan, to their first Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon.

“Just to help out, and it’s good exercise, too; I don’t know exactly how far we’re going to go,” Dickie said with a laugh.

For Jeyson Sanchez and his wife Caroline, this year marked their seventh Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon.

“Dogs are our passion,” Jeyson said, prompting his wife to say she’d take in many dogs if they could.

On Sunday, they had two canine walking partners.

“It’s good to support the humane society,” Caroline said as they approached a sidewalk where the encouraging message, “Keep your paws going,” etched in chalk.

She explained it is sad to hear stories of hurt and abused animals, which makes her grateful for organizations like the Brandon Humane Society that assist and encourage adoptions.

The animal rescue does not receive any government funding, and operates solely on the financial backing of the public.
