As the weather gets colder and the holiday season approaches, one local chiropractic clinic is encouraging Brandonites to help create a “cozier bedtime for kids.”

Atlas Chiropractic Centre has joined the Caring Chiros PJ Drive, which began in Winnipeg seven years ago.

“The main thing is there’s a lot of kids out there that need help, and parents find it tough this time of year to make ends meet,” said Dr. Alan Stitt. “So we’re happy to be able to join in and help out with the cause.”

Donations of new pyjamas ranging in sizes from newborn to youth extra large are being collected until Dec. 1 at Atlas Chiropractic Centre, located at 1337 Princess Ave. They will then be distributed to children in the area through the United Way of Brandon and District’s programs and partnerships.

It all started with Stitt’s sister-in-law Suzanne Stitt, who launched the program in Winnipeg, after she and her husband Dr. Robert Stitt, moved there from the Wheat City.

“She’s really passionate about it, so I’m trying to share some of her passion about it, too,” Alan said.

The program began at Natural Wellness Chiropractic, with about 100 pyjamas donated. A few years later, the Manitoba Chiropractors Association came on board, and it has since grown significantly.

“It was always a tradition in our family, when my children were younger, to have Santa come on Christmas Eve, and he brought a pair of pyjamas,” she said. “We did that for years and years … and now my kids are grown and gone and starting families and traditions of their own. So I thought, ‘Well why can’t we do that, for some kids in Winnipeg who may never have that opportunity or that feeling?’”

Last year, a total of 2,700 PJs were collected. The number of clinics involved varies from year to year, but they typically see 20-30 locations involved.

“We’re just getting more and more well known, which is fun,” Suzanne said. “Everybody loves it, everybody loves the idea of giving pyjamas to little kids for Christmas.”
