Country music artist Kendra Kay is capping off a successful 2017 with a gift to her fans.

The Elkhorn native released her first holiday recording — the classic Christmas carol “O Holy Night” — which is available for free download during December at kendrakaymusic.com.

“I’ve had such great support and following since I’ve been in this music thing, and I just wanted to give back to everybody who stood by me the whole way,” Kay said.

Kay collaborated with Canadian Country Music Association producer of the year, Murray Pulver, on the project.

“It’s just been one of my favourites. You listen to this song and it’s such a pretty Christmas classic that kind of gives you that feeling of holiday spirit that I love so much,” she said. “It was great to work with Murray again … He really took the idea that I had for this song and made it come to life, so I was so excited when it was finally finished.”

In a recent interview with The Brandon Sun, Kay reflected on a busy year, which included the release of two singles: “My Way” and “Better Off,” the latter of which was written by Terri Clark and Deric Ruttan.

Kay started 2017 in Toronto at Canadian Music Week, where she played at the sold-out Boots & Hearts pre-party along with country stars Drake White and Alee.

“That was super exciting,” Kay said, adding she was thrilled to play at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre. “It is a beautiful venue and it was one of the places I’ve always wanted to play.”

Her summer tour kept her busy with more than 20 shows in 15 weeks, including a headlining gig at the Manitoba Stampede in Morris and a show at Dauphin’s Countryfest.

“It’s always fun to play in Dauphin because it’s such a big Manitoba proud festival,” she said. “So it was super great to be a part of that one.”

Kay began the fall season at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Saskatoon, where she had four performances.

“We had my first-ever full band live show at the CCMAs, which actually kicked off my fall tour, that took me through Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta,” she said.

A recent highlight was performing for Rogers Hometown Hockey in Winnipeg earlier this month.

“It’s been a crazy busy year,” she said. “It’s been a long one but it’s been a lot of fun.”

Kay released her debut EP in 2014, which she recorded in Nashville. She has now amassed more than 200,000 streams on Spotify.

Looking ahead to 2018, Kay is planning a new EP release, likely in the spring.

“Once we get that out, I’ll be out on the road again for another tour to promote all my new music,” she said. “So it’s going to be a busy 2018 as well.”
