Firefighters quickly smothered a vehicle fire at a home in the city’s west end on Sunday afternoon that badly damaged a couple’s black SUV.
Brandon Fire and Emergency Services were called to a home on Riverheights Drive at 4:39 p.m. after a fire broke out under the hood of a Toyota 4Runner.
Lynda Demanski said she and her husband had just gotten home and switched vehicles, parking her car inside the garage and leaving her husband’s vehicle outside.
The couple plugged in the SUV and went inside their home. Within a couple of minutes, Demanski said she heard an alarm go off and saw that the SUV was on fire.
“Everything from the front seat forward is totally gone,” she said. “There’s nothing left of it.”
Demanski said she and her husband tried using a fire extinguisher and some snow to put out the fire, but neither worked. Demanski isn’t sure what started the fire, but the vehicle, she said, was only three months old.
The vehicle was parked close to Demanski’s garage, as well as her neighbour’s SUV and trailer.
BFES Capt. Kevin Holder said firefighters attacked the fire in such a way to protect the surrounding property and managed to put the flames out within minutes.
The fire was contained to the engine area, but Holder said the vehicle did sustain “significant damage” and will be written off.
An exact cause has not been determined at this point and no injuries were reported, but Holder did point to the fact that the vehicle was plugged in at the time of the fire.
Erin Yurchuk, a neighbour a few houses over, said she saw the fire coming from under the hood of the vehicle and could smell the toxins coming from the fire.
The flames, she said, were “licking up to the peak of the garage.”
A tow truck arrived close to 5:15 p.m. and began pulling the vehicle out of Demanski’s driveway shortly after.
