Heartbroken to see the Brandon Boxing Club go up in flames, Marianne Broome enlisted friend Amanda Dupuis to host a paint night fundraiser on July 10.

The evening event, at a yet-to-be-determined location, will find participants follow in Dupuis’ instruction by painting an image of two boxing gloves hanging from a string.

At $40 per person, the only expense covered will be materials with all proceeds going toward the Brandon Boxing Club’s renewal.

The club space and various materials were lost in the May 19 downtown Brandon fire. Owner Noel Harding not carrying insurance has made rebuilding the club to its former glory a challenge, though it has galvanized a group of supporters to assist with the effort.

Broome’s son, Landon, 16, has been a member of the club for the past year, initially as a means of getting into shape for volleyball.

With boxing resonating with the youth, he decided to keep at it, citing Harding as a key source of motivation.

“It’s a total confidence-builder in every aspect of his life,” Broome said of her son. “He’s got confidence I’ve never seen before.”

Harding is “such a good role model, for kids and adults,” she said. “I don’t know how to put it, he just has a good personality to inspire people and he gives 110 per cent.”

Both Harding as a person, and the club as a whole, are easy to support, Dupuis said, adding that alongside Broome, she’s keen to lend a hand wherever possible.

Dupuis said she has hosted a handful of similar fundraisers in the past, for organizations such as 4-H, and that she looks forward to seeing as many as 40 people come out to both show support for the Brandon Boxing Club and improve their artistic skills.

Harding will also attend the fundrasier, where he will offer a short boxing lesson and demonstration.

For more information on the fundraiser, visit the Facebook events page “Paint Night Fundraiser in Support of Brandon Boxing Club,” or call Dupuis at 204-724-9896.

Meanwhile, the club is hosting a barbecue fundraiser at the gravel parking lot across the street from the club’s former location today. Smoked and Sauced Mobile BBQ will be serving food and there will be a bouncy castle from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event will go to the Brandon Boxing Club.
