Jasmine Horwood says she wouldn’t be where she is today without the help of KidSport.

“Without their help, I wouldn’t be playing as many sports and having the success I do today,” the 14-year-old said. “I wouldn’t be going to the far places and participating in the championships.”

Last month, Horwood spoke at the 2018 Matt Calvert Charity Shootout event, where $42,176 was donated to support the KidSport program.

The golf tournament was played at the Wheat City Golf Course on June 28. The money raised will go toward giving kids like Horwood opportunities to get involved and go further with sport in the Westman area.

Horwood said that she is involved with several sports, including hockey, baseball, ringette, softball, basketball, badminton and volleyball. She spoke at the event to show those in attendance the impact the program has had on her, and how the money will benefit kids just like her.

“It was an amazing feeling telling my story to everybody and telling the success I’ve had in sports, and the help I’ve gotten from so many different people,” Horwood said.

The money raised at the golf tournament will benefit youth in the Westman area, and it will be enough to help at least 140 athletes, said Megan Foster, regional sport development officer for the Sport Manitoba’s west region.

The financial help the program provides could be the difference between someone being able to participate in sport or not.

Foster said KidSport covers up to $300 in registration costs for sports associated with a provincial organization.

Over its history, it has helped 5,553 athletes in the Westman area, with the recent $42,176 pledge adding more to that total.

“This is definitely one of the largest donations that we have ever received for KidSport west, so the whole committee was extremely excited,” Foster said.

Calvert, who played for his hometown Brandon Wheat Kings from 2007 to 2010 and recently signed a three-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League, knows the impact being an athlete has had on his own life.

Calvert, a National Hockey League player and former member of his hometown Brandon Wheat Kings, was quick to point out that “the committee did a great job on the event” and he basically just had to show up. “We just had a meeting and plans are underway for year three with the charity of choice yet to be named.”

“For me, sport is everything, and I think for kids it keeps them disciplined, it teaches them teamwork, it teaches them a lot of valuable life lessons,” Calvert said.

That’s why the money raised is so important, Calvert added.

“That’s something that I think is big for kids and for parents who are grinding and can’t afford that registration fee.”

Ultimately, the money donated to KidSport will be a benefit to kids like Horwood, so they can grow up playing sports and have those opportunities.
