Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 16/09/2018 (2674 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The smell of fried food wafted out from downtown Brandon on Sunday afternoon as 26 food trucks wrapped up the second year of Food Truck Warz.
Poutine, mini donuts, churros and pizza — there were many different options that Brandonites had the chance to tryout at this year’s food festival.
Overall, it went very well, said Jody Sass, one of the organizers.
“I went to talk to a bunch of the trucks and they were extremely happy, they exceeded their expectations,” he said.
The winner of this years’ Food Truck Warz was Smoked & Sauced Mobile BBQ, as voted by foodies who came out to the festival. Coming in second place was the winner from last year, Churro Stop, and in third was Meltdown.
The owner of Smoked & Sauced Mobile BBQ said that business hadn’t slowed down all weekend.
“It’s been extremely busy from the very start Friday when we opened,” Jayson McCallum said. “We ran out at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and we had to prep overnight to open up today.”
All the workers put in 100 per cent, he said.
“We’re all ride or die for the truck, we just work together to get the job done. It’s all about the crew.”
This has been the festival that they have looked forward to all year, and especially in the months leading up to it.
“This is like the Stanley Cup of food truck events for us,” he said.
This year, there were a lot more options then there were at last years festival, said Jason McCallum, who happens to have a similar last name to the Smoked & Sauced owner. Jason came from Saskatchewan to check out the festival, which gave him an opportunity to try out several different food options all in the same location.
“We were here yesterday and I tried five different trucks, and we’ll try and do five more different ones today,” Jason said.
Although organizer Sass said it’s hard to gauge how many people were at Food Truck Warz because it’s outside, there’s definitely been an increase in people since last year. So far, they’re hearing lots of positive feedback, he said.
“It brought a lot of people downtown that may not have been through here,” he said. “We’re hearing from people they like the fact there was the grass for them to sit.”
The festival as a whole is very family-friendly and gives food lovers from the community the opportunity to satisfy their taste buds, Sass said.
“Everyone can sort of congregate at one place and have some food they might not normally eat,” he said. “There was a lot of variety so if husband wants one place and wife wants to go somewhere else, they can and they can meet [after].”
As for Food Truck Warz next year, they won’t be talking about it for another month at least now that this one is finished, but they will be listening to what those who attended liked and disliked about it.
“We’ll talk to people and get their feedback and then go from there,” Sass said.
