With Xplore Mobile opening six stores across the province, Shoppers Mall will be home to Brandon’s lone outlet.

Kyria Hulsmans attended the Xplore Mobile store opening at Shoppers Mall on Wednesday, and was relieved at how smoothly the process ran.

Receiving a letter a few weeks ago, Hulsmans was informed she would be one of 20,000 customers transferred over to Xplore Mobile.

Originally a customer of Virgin Mobile, a Bell Mobility-owned cellphone company, Hulsmans was unsure what to expect when she visited the shop.

Originally hesitant to the idea of switching cellphone companies, Hulsmans was impressed with the ease of transferring to Xplore Mobile, along with the services they provided.

“I do like it because it’s cheaper,” Hulsmans said. “I’m very excited about that.”

With Virgin she was paying around $75 a month, but with Xplore Mobile she will now be paying about $45.

The whole process took just longer than an hour, as Xplore staff helped her switch her two tablets and phone to the network.

While the company works to make their own towers, they will be running off Virgin infrastructure, Hulsmans was told, and she expects the cellphone network to get even better as it grows.

“I’m glad that there’s another phone company offering cheaper rates … Manitoba’s rates are really high, I’m glad that there’s a different alternative,” Hulsmans said.

With the launch of the new network almost two years in the making, James Maunder, Xplornet Communications and public affairs vice-president, was excited to see the network go live.

The mobile company, the wireless service of Xplornet Communications Inc., expanded into cellular services after Bell Canada bought out MTS. An agreement with the Competition Bureau of Canada was struck in February 2017, with Xplore agreeing to adopt 20,000 former customers of Bell.

The company anticipates having extra staff on hand until March 2019 to deal with the influx of customers transitioning to Xplore Mobile, as customers are transitioned in phases to the new company.

“We’re offering choice,” Maunder said.
