Hey there, time traveller!

Construction of the new Holiday Inn Express hotel on 18th Street has begun after the proponent behind the $12-million project was approved for a building permit from the City of Brandon last month.
The latest construction permit report from the city, released on Monday, shows that the planning and buildings department issued a total of 20 permits worth $14.2 million in February, with the majority of the construction value associated with the six-storey Holiday Inn Express slated for the 1100 block of 18th Street.
Daniel Burns, CEO of the Brandon-based firm Burns Maendel Consulting Engineers Ltd., said construction started last week and they were looking at a 12- to 14-month build.
Burns Maendel brought the proposed development to the city on behalf of the Saskatoon company P.R. Hotels Ltd. in September 2017.
“It’s nice to see the project getting underway,” Burns said. “I think it will be good for Brandon and good for the community, so we’re all excited to see construction start and looking forward to it being completed.”
The 116-room hotel is set to be the first Holiday Inn Express in the province and has been described as a streamlined bed and breakfast-style operation, without meeting spaces or restaurants, with a complimentary breakfast bar.
It will be built at 1148 18th St. This property, located across the street from the Keystone Centre, previously hosted the Western Motel, which was torn down in August.
Between 35 and 45 people are expected to be employed at the Holiday Inn Express once construction has finished.
P.R. Hotels chief operating officer Jeff Krivoshen told The Sun last summer that they were hoping to break ground in November, but said Monday that the start date was pushed primarily because they wanted to go through one winter season in Manitoba as opposed to two.
He said the hotel will have an anticipated opening in the summer of 2020.
“It’s obviously exciting, something we’re looking forward to doing in Brandon and have been for a while now,” he said. “Obviously Brandon has events and … we are really excited to bring this name-brand hotel to Brandon and operate in the community of Brandon.
Coun. John LoRegio (Meadows-Waverly) said while he has not heard any concerns from residents in the area about the Holiday Inn Express since it was first proposed, people seemed to be more concerned about when construction would start.
However, he said the location of the hotel not only shows the value of the Keystone Centre, but will help spruce up the ward and provide employment.
“I think it’s great for the whole city and especially for the Keystone because now we have another hotel across from the Keystone to provide accommodation,” he said.
