A Vincent Massey High School student is heading to a national competition in Ontario in May.

Elayna Paddock-Thiessen won first place at the Brain Bee in Winnipeg earlier this month, winning herself a trip to the Canadian National Brain Bee in Hamilton, Ont. The competition tests students knowledge of the brain and neuroscience research.

They’ve been coming to the competition for three years, and this is the third time a Vincent Massey High School student has won, said Lindsay Metruk, a teacher at the school.

“We’re extremely proud,” Metruk said. “I think our students are just really driven. It takes a lot for a student to sign up for something extracurricular that they have to do themselves, and I think that speaks to how motivated our students are.”

The competition was held March 9 in Winnipeg.

More to come in Westman this Week on March 28.
