PED virus moves farther west

The Manitoba Pork Council says the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus has moved farther west in Manitoba. The last time The Sun reported on the virus, it had just crossed the Red River into the Morris and Lowe Farm area. Now a case has been detected at a facility in Notre Dame de Lourdes, 140 kilometres southeast of Brandon.

This is the farthest west the virus has ever been detected in Manitoba.

There have been 43 detected cases of PED in Manitoba in 2019 as of the provincial government’s last update on June 25. That represents the second-most number of cases in history after 2017, where 80 cases were detected.

The virus is not transmittable to humans.

ProTELEC leaves residential security sector

Manitoba-based security company ProTELEC announced on Friday it had sold its residential security business to a.p.i. Alarm Inc. in order to focus solely on commercial security.

“ProTELEC is proud to have been providing security in Brandon and area for more than 35 years. With the sale of our residential division, we’re well positioned to build our capacity here now and for a long time to come,” said Harry Black, president of ProTELEC Security + Safety Ltd.

The company operates throughout Manitoba including Brandon, Minnedosa and Carberry. Its clients include hospitals, agricultural businesses and industrial companies as well as cannabis producers.

Customers transferred over to a.p.i. are now asked to submit payment to their head office in Toronto and contact a.p.i. customer service for any problems.
