The inaugural Neepawa Film Festival is set to kick off Aug. 10, showcasing nearly three hours of local films.

The festival will screen 11 short films, all with a connection to within 100 kilometres of Neepawa, the Neepawa Film Festival committee said in a news release.

The Neepawa Film Festival is a partnership between two local not-for-profits — NACTV and the Neepawa Theatre Centre (Roxy Theatre).

“I’m really impressed with the quality and variety of entries we’ve received, and I think the audience will be, too,” Roxy chairwoman Kate Jackman-Atkinson said in the news release.

“We are looking forward to viewing the entries.”

The entries run from five minutes to about a half-hour in length and represent a diverse range of subject matter. There are documentaries in the form of travelogues, personal stories and local history. There are also dramatic entries, featuring both original scripts and historical classics. Entries have come from filmmakers of all ages, giving both family and friends a chance to work together.

The screening will begin at 1 p.m., with an intermission around the halfway point. The day’s events will also include a question-and-answer session with some of the filmmakers in attendance, as well as an awards ceremony.

Prizes will be awarded based on audience voting, with all attendees selecting their top three favourite films in three categories: People’s Choice (all entries), People’s Choice Youth (under 18) and Nod to Neepawa (films about Neepawa).

Following the festival, the entries will be shown on NACTV for the following year.

“We at NACTV are excited to be able to be a partner in this venture,” said NACTV board chairman Don Walmsley. “Original local television programming is our mandate, and this is an amazing opportunity encourage local filmmakers/videographers to share their work.”

It wasn’t just the filmmaking community that stepped up to support the festival, Jackman-Atkinson said.

“We had a really positive response from the business community, in the form of sponsorships, that made this event possible,” she said.
