Workers at Maple Leaf’s meat processing plant in Brandon voted to reject the company’s latest contract offer on Monday.

A spokesperson for UFCW local 832 told the Sun that the union had reached a tentative agreement with Maple Leaf but it was rejected by employees with 65 per cent voting against during day-long voting on Dec. 2.

“The bargaining committee is working out the next steps and will be communicating with our members shortly,” UFCW local 832 president Jeff Traeger said in an email.

There is less than a month before the contract for the 1,900 UFCW members at the plant expires at midnight on Dec. 31.

The Sun has reached out for comment from Maple Leaf on the situation.

In late June, the Sun reported that Maple Leaf and UFCW were beginning talks to replace the current contract signed in 2015.

The plant is Brandon’s largest private employer.
