There are those who love cars — and then there are those who just want their automotive experience to be as hassle-free as possible.

To someone not versed in car knowledge, it might be intimidating trying to find an automotive gift for someone.

This week, the Sun talked with Trevor Betlor, assistant team leader at Brandon’s Princess Auto, to find some gift ideas for the gearhead in your life.

Betlor said that a common but helpful gift is a socket set.

There are lots of kinds to choose from, ranging from small sets for beginners to do-it-yourself auto repair, to larger and more complex sets for professional mechanics or people entering an automotive program at college.

On the basic end, you’re looking at sets of 13 sockets for approximately $14.99, with larger, high quality sets approaching $200.

A common concern for motorists is how to properly manage winter conditions. A simple gift in that vein is a long window scraper.

Princess Auto sells snow brush/ice scraper combos up to five feet long, so you can have a longer reach. One of those longer scrapers will run you $27.99, but there are also cheaper, shorter examples to be found.

To get out of low-traction situations, Princess Auto sells Big Grippers and Lil Grippers. These spiked devices can be secured to your wheels with a ratchet and strap to provide extra grip in emergencies.

The Big Grippers, for larger-sized tires, cost $149.99 for a two-pack. Lil Grippers, for smaller tires, cost $99.99 for a pair.

One of the biggest-selling items Princess Auto had all year were Mini Jeeps with 125cc engines for approximately $2,000.

Betlor said that these military-style mini-vehicles with a top speed of 50 km/h were perfect for kids (or some adults) to cruise around the farm.

While these aren’t currently in stock, he expects them to be a hot item when they show up in store once the winter ends.

“We will be looking into get lots more this coming summer,” he said.

Of course, if you’re unsure of what to get, Betlor said that customers always have the option of buying a gift card and letting the recipient decide what they want.
