Brandon’s Concordia United held a lead in the second half but ultimately fell 7-4 to Winnipeg’s Pioneers FC in the third annual futsal provincial final on Sunday at the Henry Champ Gymnasium at Brandon University.

It’s the first time the event has been contested in Brandon.

Concordia trailed 3-2 after the first 25-minute half in the five-on-five gymnasium version of soccer, but Igor Lytuynyuk tied the game 20 seconds into the second half and Diego Rivas gave them a 4-3 lead with 21 minutes left.

The visitors took the game over, however, with 12 minutes remaining when Elliot Peddle and Derek Mains struck for goals 36 seconds apart. Mains added another goal two minutes later to salt the game away.

Concordia also received first-half goals from Norvin Campos and Julio Rodriguez. Mickey Friesen and Daniel Harrison split the game in net for the Brandon side.

With the victory, Pioneers FC returns to the Canadian national championship.
