Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Jiri Patera has been named the Eastern Conference’s goaltender of the year by the Western Hockey League.
A product of Prague, Czech Republic, the six-foot-two, 205-pound netminder rebounded from ankle surgery in October to play 2,449 minutes, 12th in the league, while facing 1,321 shots, which was ninth.
Patera, 21, a Vegas Golden Knights prospect, was selected by Brandon in the second round of the 2017 Canadian Hockey League import draft.
During 89 appearances in his WHL career, Patera compiled a 46-32-5-4 record, a 2.95 goals-against average and a save percentage of .913 with six shutouts.
This season, he allowed one goal or fewer in 12 of 41 appearances as he earned a 2.55 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and six shutouts.
He was named to the Eastern Conference first all-star team last week.
Patera will compete for the league award against Western Conference nominee Dustin Wolf of the Everett Silvertips.
Wolf, who is a member of his conference’s first all-star team, led the way in goals-against average (1.88), save percentage (.935) and shutouts with nine. He was tied with Joel Hofer of the Portland Winterhawks with 34 wins.
A six-foot, 165-pound product of Tustin, Calif., Wolf is tied for fifth in shutouts in league history.
The WHL will name a winner for the league award on May 18.
Brandon goalies who have won the WHL honour are Trevor Robins (1992-93), Trevor Kidd (1989-90), Rick Knickle (1978-79) and Glen Hanlon (1976-77).
Earlier this week, the league announced that forwards Dylan Guenther of the Edmonton Oil Kings and Logan Stankoven of the Kamloops Blazers are the nominees for top rookie, and forwards Aliaksei Protas of the Prince Albert Raiders and Seth Jarvis of the Portland Winterhawks are nominees for the league’s most sportsmanlike player.
