Wyatt Greer wasted no time showing he’s a Neelin Spartan to build successful teams around.

He was the man in the middle for Neelin’s AAA junior varsity provincial volleyball title this season and the leading scorer on a star-studded basketball team poised to make a deep run before COVID-19 concerns shut the season down.

Now he’s a back-to-back Spartans JV male athlete of the year.

“I’m kind of speechless,” Greer said after Neelin staff showed up at his house Tuesday night to present the award. “They came out of nowhere … I had no idea it was happening.”

Naturally, winning a provincial title was the highlight of Greer’s year, especially because the Spartans weren’t expected to come out on top after entering as the No. 3 seed, nor after a rough 1-2 effort in pool play. But they brought their best when it mattered most and beat Beausejour’s Edward Schreyer 25-23, 25-15 for gold.

“At the beginning I wasn’t too big of a factor but as the season went on I was having bigger and bigger roles,” Greer said.

“It was great. We had stepping stones through the way and challenges through the way all the time. It was always a challenge and we were always going through a challenge. We got to win a provincial banner, so it was great.”

Few JV athletes in Brandon put in as much time as Greer on the basketball court. The six-foot-two forward spent plenty of hours in the gym all summer and it paid off right from a respectable fifth-place finish in the Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational’s Tier 2 in December.

Greer can play any position on the floor and is only improving from here. While one possible title run was cut short, he has two years left and plenty to play for.

“It sucked but there was a silver lining that we got a lot better,” he said.

“I’m pretty motivated and working hard every day.”
