The Nearly New shop opens its doors again today after it was forced to close for nearly three months due to pandemic-related restrictions.

The shop, which raises money for the Brandon Regional Health Centre, has brought in new procedures similar to other stores that have reopened, according to manager Agnes Keep.

She said there will now be a hand-sanitizing station at the front door, a plexiglass shield in front of the cash register and the volunteers who run the store are being encouraged to wear masks. A maximum of 15 customers will be allowed inside the store at once.

“We do have a totally full store, lots of everything and all our stock is all safe. There’s no possibility of any germs or whatever on it, we’ve been very careful about that,” Keep said.

The thrift store was closed for longer than other stores since the end of March, but that ensured the approximately 80 volunteers would be safe when the doors opened to customers again.

“We run on volunteers, all our money goes to buy equipment for patient care at the hospital … being volunteers means they’re all in the older age group, so we really wanted to be careful and make sure everyone could be safe,” she said.

Keep said she is “delighted” to be reopening and the volunteers can “hardly wait.”

The store is full of summer clothing, hats, games and puzzles. Keep said she expects puzzles and board games to be especially popular as people look for things to keep them occupied while spending more time at home.

“We’ve always been well supported by the community. We’ve had lots of phone calls, people holding onto things to donate and we’ve always had wonderful support from the community coming in to buy our stock,” she said.

“The store is absolutely full of wonderful things just ready to go.”

Since it opened, the store has raised more than $3 million for the Brandon hospital.

The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday and closed Sunday.

“We’re anxious to start making money for the hospital again,” Keep said.
