A new outbreak at Fairview Personal Care Home was declared after a health-care worker at the facility tested positive for COVID-19.

That’s according to an email sent out to the families of residents at the home from the care home’s care team manager, Cynthia Chartrand. A copy of the email was sent to the Sun by someone who asked to remain anonymous.

No residents at the care home have tested positive for the virus and no residents are showing any respiratory symptoms, the email states.

An outbreak at the home was declared on Tuesday, but no specifics were disclosed by either Prairie Mountain Health or Manitoba Health.

It’s the second outbreak at the care home in five months. Several resident deaths were linked to COVID-19 during the prior outbreak.

The Sun asked for further details, but a government spokesperson said information would be posted on Manitoba’s online COVID-19 dashboard and further information would only be disclosed if a public health risk was assessed and informing the public was necessary to protect the health of others.

Fairview was added to the province’s online list of COVID-19 outbreaks on Wednesday, but the entry for the home states that there are zero cases connected to the outbreak.

A government spokesperson later confirmed to the Sun via email that there was an error in the entry and it should read that a single case in a staff member has been detected. They wrote the error would be corrected in today’s online update.

While the outbreak is ongoing at Fairview, the email outlines several measures being put in place to protect residents.

Visitor restrictions have been increased, including the cancellation of outdoor visits and visits in the outdoor shelter. Designated family caregiver indoor visits are still allowed between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., but only one designated caregiver can visit at a time.

New admissions to the home are being suspended and any residents showing symptoms will be placed in isolation with their needs being taken care of by dedicated staff.

Staff is being screened to see if testing needs to occur at the home and any staff members in contact with residents will be wearing protective equipment to stop any potential spread between themselves and residents.

Chartrand ended the email by saying another email update would be provided no later than Friday.
