Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 08/05/2021 (1802 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The past year has been a difficult one for many in our region as pandemic-induced restrictions have not only crippled local companies and driven up unemployment rates but also forced all of us to rethink how we do business in our communities and interact socially. This is on top of the health concerns that still face citizens across the country.
As we told our readers several months ago during the first lockdown in 2020, The Brandon Sun has not been immune to these financial stresses either. As businesses have suffered in our community, we have in turn felt those same effects.
However, we must recognize that the pandemic has hastened changes to the news industry across the country — changes that were already on the horizon long before the pandemic began. The financial model for traditional news media has been shifting for several years as we have slowly marched toward a digital future.
Faced with lower revenues, we have looked at possible changes, including cutting the number of days per week we print the paper. We don’t want to do that. So, the Brandon Sun will increase the monthly subscription to $24.99 (print subscription) and $14.99 for an online subscription as of June 7, 2021. Along with that, the paper will also see an increase in our single copy price by .50. Effectively the Monday-Friday rate will increase to $2 per copy and 2.50 per copy on Saturday.
These rate increases are necessary for your Brandon Sun to continue delivery of the six-day daily newspaper. Our subscription prices are still lower than most other daily newspapers in cities of our size across Canada. We also need the support of local and area advertisers now and in the future more than ever.
The Brandon Sun has been a part of western Manitoba for 139 years, and it’s our intention to continue that tradition.
