It’s time to blow the dust off the fishing gear as the province announced fishing season in the southern division of the province officially opens on Saturday. The rest of the province opens on May 22.

“Manitobans are fortunate to have an abundance of trophy fisheries located throughout the province,” said Pedersen. “Recreational angling is a fantastic way to spend time with family while enjoying the outdoors.”

Some fish may still be spawning during the start of the angling season. To protect fish stocks, anglers who catch a fish discharging eggs, are asked to release them back into the water in an effort to protect fish stocks.

Angling licences are still required in Manitoba unless exempt. Licences are now available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be immediately purchased and printed at home. See www.manitobaelicensing.ca/licensing.page for more information and to print off a licence.

There are new fishing regulations for anglers as well.

New regulations for 2021-22 include:

• Marge Lake – walleye limit is two and all walleye shorter than 35 centimetres must be released;

• Bradley Lake – provincial smallmouth bass limits and size restriction;

• Mirror Lake – trout limit is one and closed to all fishing from Sept. 15 to and including Oct. 31; and

• Summerhill Lake – walleye limit is four.

The Manitoba Angler’s Guide for provincial fishing regulations is available online. See the 2021 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide at manitobafisheries.com for more information.

To prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) such as zebra mussels, surface water users are reminded of the requirements when entering and exiting all water bodies in Manitoba. Fines for failing to stop at a watercraft inspection station will see offenders receive a fine as high as $672.

As public health orders continue, fishermen are expected to uphold the province’s latest round of restrictions.
